Horton quarry community page

Horton quarry is situated within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and has been producing limestone and high-quality gritstone since 1889.

The site is rail connected, allowing it to supply construction projects across the north west while reducing vehicle movements on the roads and cutting the associated carbon emissions.

Eighteen people – all from the local area – are employed at Horton, as well as many more in our supply chain of contractors and support staff. We actively support local initiatives and programmes which benefit the community and environment.

About Horton quarry

Horton is a large quarry situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It covers almost 80ha and is surrounded by SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and SAC (Special Areas of Conservation) areas, which include limestone pavement areas.

The quarry extracts Carboniferous limestone to produce a variety of aggregates for use in our own ready-mixed concrete plants in the north west of England and in external customers’ concrete products. It also produces high PSV (polished stone value) gritstone, which is used in asphalt for road maintenance and construction.

Horton quarry has around 50 million tonnes of consented reserves and, once extraction is complete, the site will be restored to calcareous grassland.
