Community gardens in Penyffordd get a major revamp
A local volunteer group in Penyffordd, Flintshire, has been busy making improvements to its community garden, supported by a generous donation from our Padeswood cement works.
We donated £8,500 to revamp the Millstone community garden and allotments, transforming it into a welcoming, family-friendly space.
The project included resurfacing and extending the pathways throughout the garden and adjacent allotments, as well as planting a commemorative tree. This was alongside other improvement activities including installing raised beds and picnic benches. The resurfacing work was carried out by local contractor, SRR Property Solutions.
Local families and children are already making good use of the space as a welcoming area to relax, play and spend time together.
“We’re very grateful to Heidelberg Materials for its generous donation towards our community garden,” said Becky Whiteley, Chair of the volunteer group.
“The old pathways were in poor condition and full of potholes, so having them resurfaced has made them safer and more accessible for everyone.”
David Quick, Plant Manager at Padeswood cement works, said: “Our Padeswood site has been operating in the local area since 1949, and as a long-standing part of the community, we are committed to playing our part and being a good neighbour.
“We hope the improved garden will be enjoyed by the community for many years to come.”
Padeswood cement works is leading the decarbonisation of the cement sector in the UK through carbon capture and storage. Construction is underway to build the UK’s first carbon capture facility at a cement works, which is expected to be complete in 2029, enabling the production of evoZero carbon captured near-zero cement. The project has put north Wales on the global map for carbon capture and is bringing significant benefits to the region’s economy, as well as protecting more than 200 direct and indirect local jobs and creating around 50 new full-time ones.
