About Penderyn Quarry
Penderyn is a limestone quarry located eight miles north of Aberdare in South Wales.
Working to the maximum planned hours, the plant is capable of producing 500k tonnes of limestone per year. Reserves are in excess of 15 million tonnes. The quarry supplies products to the internal concrete and asphalt businesses, and externally, has a high demand for - 4mm material due to the very consistent quality and colour of the crushed material.
History
Penderyn Quarry has been operational since circa 1890. The processing plant was built in the early 1950’s and refurbished in the 1970’s.
Interesting Fact
The Quarry was once linked to the rail network, and was used to supply ballast to the sidings at Hirwaun. When the specification for the ballast changed in the 1980’s, the quarry were no longer able to supply and the railway lines were subsequently removed.
