Meet the Creepy Crawler Hauler

The bug hotel at our Batts Combe quarry has officially been named the Creepy Crawler Hauler, thanks to the creativity of a local school pupil.

The Axe Valley Men’s Shed, in collaboration with the Somerset Earth Science Centre, designed and built the bug hotel as part of Heidelberg Materials’ biodiversity competition, the Quarry Life Award.

As part of the Bug Big Build project, pupils from local schools were invited to take part in a creative competition to name the structure, which was built using recycled wooden pallets.

Seven-year-old Isaac Parsons from Axbridge First School was selected as the winner of the competition and attended the opening ceremony at the quarry this week.

Isaac also received a goody bag, plus a kit to create his own bug hotel in his garden at home.

All 140 children at Axbridge First School received a copy of Ewan’s Quarry Adventure, which was written by Heidelberg Materials colleague, Emily Stevenson.

When asked how he came up with the winning name, Isaac said, “It just popped into my head; I was thinking about it for five minutes!”

Simon Parkes, Batts Combe Unit Manager, said: “We really enjoyed reading all of the entries from participating schools and were very impressed with the creativity shown. Congratulations again to Isaac for coming up with the winning name.”

The Creepy Crawler Hauler is located on the edge of the car park at Batts Combe quarry and provides shelter for a variety of insects including bees, beetles, moths and millipedes.
