Students discover careers in quarrying during Aspirations Week
Martin Symons, Community Support Co-Ordinator and former Logistics Manager at Whatley quarry recently visited St Louis Primary School in Frome as part of its Aspirations Week to talk to students about his varied 50-year career at the quarry.
Throughout the day, Martin spoke to over 115 students from Year Three to Year Six about the different job roles within a quarry and discussed how operatives, engineers, geologists and more all play an important part in the day-to-day operations of Whatley quarry.
Students also learnt about how materials from the quarry, such as limestone, are used to build our homes, schools and hospitals.
“It was a pleasure to be invited to speak at the school’s careers week again,” said Martin. “Whatley quarry offers a range of exciting job roles, so it was a great opportunity to speak to the students about the subjects and skills that can help them work towards these roles in the future.”
Rosie Lihou, Head of School at St Louis Primary, said: “Aspirations Week gives our students the chance to learn about different industries and the people who work in them. The children really enjoyed listening to Martin’s experiences and asked thoughtful questions about his career journey.”
