Padeswood cement works near Mold in Flintshire, north Wales, supplies high quality cement for construction projects across the UK.

The site uses limestone from our nearby Cefn Mawr quarry to produce bulk and packed cement products.

It is rail connected, enabling it to supply cement by train while reducing vehicle movements on the wider road network and cutting associated carbon emissions.

More than 200 people are directly and indirectly employed at the works as well as many more across our supply chain of contractors and support staff.

We actively support local initiatives and programmes which benefit our local community and environment including cash and material donations.

About Padeswood cement

Padeswood cement works opened in 1949 to supply cement to help rebuild post-war Britain.

It is one of three cement works operated by Heidelberg Materials in the UK and is the site where we will build the UK’s first carbon capture facility at a cement works.

Recent investment in a new cement grinding mill at the site has boosted production and improved efficiency by about 30 per cent, which has removed the need to send thousands of tonnes of raw material to other sites for grinding.

The site has also added three rail cement silos to enable up to three trains a week to be loaded for delivery to our depots in London, Bristol or Glasgow.

The works is home to an eco-centre, which is run by Flintshire County Council and includes a polytunnel, raised beds, eco-classroom and wooded area.

It has also been included in Heidelberg Materials' Quarry Life Awards, which aim to support and increase biodiversity at our sites.

A world-leading carbon capture facility

We have signed final contracts with the UK Government for our world-leading carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at Padeswood. It means that we are now going ahead with our plans to build the world’s first carbon capture facility to enable fully decarbonised cement production at the site.

The project will bring significant economic benefits to the area through investment and job creation, as well as capturing almost all of the CO₂ produced at the existing works.

Five new faces join the Padeswood team

We are pleased to welcome four engineering apprentices and a graduate trainee manager.

Antoine Kitten has started our graduate programme while Josh Stennett, Robert-Lee Games-Lewsey, Ben Roberts and Alastair Morrish have joined as apprentices.

Rail siding investment allows the train to take the strain

A major investment at Padeswood works will enable more cement to be moved by rail, reducing lorry traffic on the wider road network and cutting associated CO₂ emissions.

The project is the first stage of a £445 million UK Government investment in Welsh rail which will also improve scheduling of passenger trains from Wrexham to Liverpool.
